This prequel to the Harry Potter series finally introduces us to the infamous character Nicolas Flamel, the immortal alchemist who creates the Philosopher’s Stone (called the Sorcerer’s Stone in the U.S. releases). Flamel is one of a handful of characters in the Harry Potter universe that is actually based on a real person.

The real Nicolas Flamel, who lived in the 14th century was really a French scribe whom many thought was an alchemist. Rumor was he actually did create a Philosopher’s Stone, although this is obviously the stuff of legend.

This may actually be a reference to his father, director Alejandro Jodorowsky. His father’s films include “El Topo”, and “The Holy Mountain”. Especially in the case of “The Holy Mountain”, Alejandro Jodorowsky is a filmmaker known for using heavy occult imagery in his films. In The Holy Mountain, his father played an Alchemist as well.

Joe’s Random Movie Trivia: “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (1971)

There is a very popular fan theory that Wonka is in fact, George Weasley from the Harry Potter series.

image

If you observe the mannerisms of Wonka and the look and tone of the factory as a whole, it seems easy to see it originating from the wizarding world presented in Harry Potter. The factory itself is very much a kin to Weasleys’ Wizarding Wheezes, the candy shop George originally operated with his twin brother Fred.

image

There’s even a reference to George losing his ear in the seventh Potter novel (Granted, he points to the other ear. But then again, that’s the kind of sense of humor the Weasleys had).
But perhaps the biggest clue they’ve given: Wonka’s office. Everything is in halves. Symbolizing how incomplete he feels without his twin brother.

Joe’s Random Movie Review: “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (2016)

image

When J.K. Rowling first created the universe of “Harry Potter” it reopened, and re-imagined the fantasy genre for a whole new generation of readers and moviegoers alike And like most fans, we knew that “The Deathly Hollows” was the final story. Well, final maybe for Harry Potter. However, the universe, like any fictional universe has many characters, many stories, and many different points of view that create new plot points previously unknown. Fantastic Beasts is one such story.

Set in the 1920’s in New York City, the film follows Newt Scamander, a wizard briefly mentioned in the Harry Potter stories, has arrived from England with a magical suitcase filled with all kinds of magical creatures. Which he hopes to research and eventually write a book in an effort to teach fellow wizards and witches that some of these creatures aren’t actually that bad. Meanwhile, tensions rise as the secrets of the discarding world are close to being discovered by Muggles (called No-Maj) in the film.

The setting of this movies definitely adds a unique quality to not only the Harry Potter universe, but to Fantasy films in general. The American urban landscape creates a world which fans of the previous books and movies are quite unfamiliar with and adds to the claustrophobia of the city and time period. The special effects were nothing short of superb. The computer animation was top notch, and gives an almost Ray Harryhausen like feel to these creatures interacting with humans.

It would be extremely difficult to not fully compare this particular movies to the Harry Potter movies. But what truly makes this film stand out from the others is the unique choice of a hero. Scamander is a bookworm, and a bit of a trickster when it comes to his heroic skills. A polar opposite to that of Potter who shows nothing much more than a sort of arrogant bravery in the face of pure evil. In many ways, how Scamander is portrayed is very much a breath of fresh air from the previous installments.

Overall, this was a terrific movie, great acting, great story.
There’s a lot more room in the Harry Potter universe.

Joe’s Random Movie Trivia: “Harry Potter” series

One of the many unanswered questions of the series. It was already known that Severus Snape was the one who discovered James and Lily Potter dead, and got Harry out of there. But what was Snape doing there in the first place? J.K. Rowling recently revealed in an interview that after the years of rivalry between the Potters and Shape, James and Lily were ready to make peace with Snape. They invited him there because they wanted him to be a godfather to the second child that Lily was pregnant with, when Voldemort killed her and James.
